Lower Manhattan (or Downtown Manhattan or just Downtown) is the southernmost part of the island of Manhattan in the American metropolis New York City. Downtown borders Midtown in the north, which is located south of Uptown.

The district is the center of New York City’s financial world and borders on the Hudson, the East River and north on 14th Street. All of Lower Manhattan and especially the Financial District is crossed by thoroughfares in the south-north and east-west direction. The Lower Manhattan business center is the real core below Chamber Street. The area is best known for the Financial District and the former World Trade Center. At the southern tip are Battery Park and South Street Seaport (two other historic areas of the district). The Lower Manhattan Business District is after Midtown Manhattan, Chicago’s Loop, and Washington D.C. the fourth largest business center in the United States.
